The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is a public health association for chronic disease program directors of each state and U.S. territory. Since its founding in 1988, NACDD has been a national leader in the effort to reduce chronic diseases by mobilizing its members to advocate for preventive policies and programs, encourage knowledge sharing and develop model partnerships for health promotion through state and community-based prevention strategies.

About the Diabetes Council

Welcome to the Diabetes Council of the Association of State and Territorial Chronic Disease Directors (otherwise known as ‘NACDD’).

The Diabetes Council represents Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCPs) staff in the states and territories and those who care about improving the health of those affected by diabetes.

We invite you to become involved in your Diabetes Council through participation on one of the many active committees. The Diabetes Council Membership Brochure provides you with full details on the Council, including how to become involved.

What is the purpose of the Diabetes Council?
The purpose of the Diabetes Council is to serve as a channel through which directors of Diabetes Prevention and Control Programs (DPCPs) of states, territories, commonwealths, districts and possessions of the United States may advocate public policy, improve the effectiveness and efficiency of public health diabetes prevention and control programs, and enhance professional development of its members in order to improve the health of the nation.

The functions of the Council are to:

  • Participate with NACDD in promoting programs to protect the health of the nation
  • Provide an avenue through which public health DPCPs may act collectively with national, professional, governmental, and voluntary agencies and associations on issues that affect the operation and implementation of publicly funded DPCPs
  • Link with entities to create opportunities to exchange and share ideas, strategies and methods for professional and program growth
  • Formulate positions on public policy and legislation which can be sent as recommendations to the Legislative and Policy Committee of the NACDD Board of Directors
  • Coordinate advocacy activities and public policy statements with the Legislative and Policy Committee of the NACDD Board of Directors
  • Provide a forum for Diabetes Council issues and activities
  • Negotiate consensus positions on federal program administrative policies and legislation related to diabetes control and prevention
  • Evaluate and translate relevant scientific and educational developments and their implications
  • Serve in a consultative role with the Issues Committee of NACDD
