About Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD), whose two major risk factors are diabetes and hypertension, is a serious, but largely preventable, public health issue. There are now more than 506,000 people in the United States with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the form of CKD in which life can be sustained only by dialysis or transplantation. Milder forms of CKD that do not yet require renal replacement therapy are much more common than ESRD. The total number of Americans living with CKD is now estimated to be 26 million, representing 15% of the adult US population; the 0.25% of the population estimated to have ESRD comes from this large group of individuals with early CKD. Because of the severity of this public health issue, NACDD formed a Workgroup focused on CKD in 2009. The purpose of the CKD Workgroup is to: · Increase capacity of state health departments to address chronic kidney disease · Provide a national voice for state health departments to address chronic kidney disease · Raise awareness of chronic kidney disease prevention and control efforts · Promote best practices · Increase professional development for state program staff Who should join? · State health department staff who work in kidney disease programs. · State health department staff who work in diabetes prevention and control or heart disease and stroke prevention programs that are interested in addressing kidney disease. What are the intended outcomes of the CKD Workgroup? · Identify and promote resources that are available to states wanting to address CKD · Increased awareness about the prevention and management of CKD · (with additional funding) Work with key partners to increase public health funding available to state health departments to address CKD · Network with other professionals working on similar issues How do I join?
