The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is a public health association for chronic disease program directors of each state and U.S. territory. Since its founding in 1988, NACDD has been a national leader in the effort to reduce chronic diseases by mobilizing its members to advocate for preventive policies and programs, encourage knowledge sharing and develop model partnerships for health promotion through state and community-based prevention strategies.

Navigating Cooperative Agreements is a dynamic, day-and-a-half workshop for state chronic disease directors and program managers, designed to enable more effective management of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cooperative agreements related to categorical chronic disease programs funded by the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP).  Topics covered include:

  • Developing and managing budgets, work plans and evaluations;
  • Roles and relationships in the cooperative agreement process;
  • Developing and maintaining a productive relationship with a CDC project officer;
  • Obtaining technical assistance from CDC; and
  • Planning and executing productive site visits.

Navigating Cooperative Agreements is co-facilitated by an experienced state chronic disease program staff person and a CDC project officer, and is intended to complement one segment of the Project Officer of the Future course provided for CDC project officers.  Both courses are designed to improve skills and enhance relationships between state chronic disease workers and CDC staff, with the ultimate goal of increasing effectiveness of chronic disease prevention and control programs around the country as change agents improving the public’s health.

Navigating Cooperative Agreements directly supports the following domains of the NACDD Competencies for Chronic Disease Practice:

  • Build Support
  • Design and Evaluate Programs
  • Manage Programs and Resources
