social marketing and the development of an effective issues brief; use of burden data to demonstrate value to the selected audience; development of return on investment (ROI) presentations in the difficult issues of chronic disease prevention; and effective communication of your business case to your audiences.

Interactive group exercises during the workshop enable you to use templates, develop examples, and benefit from work with your colleagues on issues of importance.  You will leave the workshop with plans and templates for immediate use.

Objectives:  At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and apply the basic principles of social marketing as they apply to making the business case.
  • Determine and present the economic burden of chronic disease in a variety of formats.
  • Create an effective issue brief targeted to key stakeholders.
  • Discuss the difference between interventions that are cost effective compared to cost saving.
  • Describe the use and application of ROI cost calculators.
  • Identify and answer the key questions to show value to the chosen audience.
  • Assess the information needs of a chosen audience.
  • Adjust your communication strategies in response to audience questions and/or resistance.

Although the development of initial burden data, and the establishment of alliances, are certainly crucial components of the business case development process, these skills are not the focus of this workshop, since they are an on-going role of the chronic disease practitioner.

The workshop is co-facilitated by experienced chronic disease leaders, who bring insights and strengths from their varied backgrounds in both leadership and epidemiology to share with participants during the course of the workshop.
