The Department of Health Bureau of Cancer and Chronic Disease has launched OWN YOUR HEALTH, a cross-cutting media campaign designed to increase awareness among District residents about resources and tools to empower a proactive, personalized approach to wellness. Through television, radio, newspapers and magazines, a coordinated message educates and empowers residents' decisions concerning health and wellness needs. Social media outlets including Facebook and Twitter are also being used to spread the word with key messages including:
- Connect to your primary care physician or clinic;
- Screening (Know your numbers such has blood pressure, body weight, cholesterol level and blood glucose level);
- Self-Management (get healthier, everyone can move along the continuum of wellness)
- Risk reduction, risk management (don't smoke, move more, eat well etc.)
During the months to come, ads will appear on bus shelters, in movie theatres and in local publications featuring the faces of "real" people who are on the journey to good health. By capturing the attention of local residents, DOH is encouraging each one to take stock of where they are and then take the first step to improving overall wellness. Some of the ads illustrate themes of family support to take on the challenge of lifelong health. While the campaign is designed to address chronic disease overall, it does include targeted messages on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and asthma.
