NACDD Applauds the American Medical Association and CDC partnership to Combat the Diabetes Epidemic

Over 86 million people in the U.S. are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and most of them do not know it. The time to act to prevent diabetes is now and it will require an all hands on deck approach. National, state, and local partnerships are needed to ensure that people who are most at risk for developing type 2 diabetes are screened for prediabetes and have access to information and programs to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

The American Medical Association and CDC are embarking on a multi-year initiative, Prevent Diabetes STAT: Screen, Test, Act - Today™, to increase awareness and the sense of urgency that all, health care providers, partners, patients and the public, take actions to prevent type 2 diabetes. One of the first products of the initiative is a jointly produced Guide, “American Medical Association and CDC: Preventing Type 2 Diabetes - A guide to refer your patients with prediabetes to an evidence-based diabetes prevention program.” The guide provides tools to engage clinicians and patients to increase awareness of prediabetes and has practical tools on how to incorporate screening, testing, and referral into provider practices.

The guide release is timely as NACDD is currently working with states through Communities of Practice (CoP) on increasing referrals to Diabetes Prevention Programs. Many of the tools in the guide are being discussed on the CoP calls and CoP members are sharing and discussing how states are using or plan to use the AMA CDC guide with state and local partners.

NACDD and AMA have also begun a partnership to provide technical assistance to states with an emphasis on addressing reimbursement of and referrals to the Diabetes Prevention Program. This partnership will compliment NACDDs existing approach to working with states to scale and sustain the National Diabetes Prevention Program by providing expertise on working with local health care systems and providers. Both NACDD and AMA will provide onsite technical assistance to states and their partners at a state engagement meeting to scale and sustain the Diabetes Prevention Program. In 2015, three states have been strategically selected based on burden, need, and readiness of partners to take action. The three states are Michigan, South Carolina, and California.

NACDD welcomes AMAs vision and strategic focus on diabetes prevention and the many strengths it brings to all partnerships, national, state, and local, to the fight for diabetes prevention.
