ENROLL AMERICA: WHERE ARE THE UNINSURED?
Select a state from the menu and a Google map with the distribution of the uninsured in that state will launch in a new browser window. The maps show the distribution of the uninsured in a state by combining Census "Public-Use Microdata Areas" (PUMAs) and data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). All maps are interactive and clicking on any PUMA in a state displays more information on the number of uninsured and the distribution of the uninsured by income (based on the federal poverty level) and race/ethnicity. www.enrollamerica.org/maps

CDC ANNOUNCES NEW MEMBERS FOR THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON BREAST CANCER IN YOUNG WOMEN
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today seven new members who will serve on the Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women (ACBCYW). The Committee was chartered in 2010 and consists of external experts and stakeholders. The committee members serve two- to four-year terms.
These newly-appointed experts will advise CDC in developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based approaches to advance the understanding and awareness of breast cancer among young women. The individuals invited to serve on the Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women represent researchers, clinicians, advocates, and breast cancer survivors from across the country. QUICKSTATS: PERCENTAGE OF DAILY CALORIES CONSUMED FROM FAST FOOD AMONG ADULTS AGED > YEARS, BY AGE GROUP – NATIONAL HEALTH AND NUTRITION EXAMINATION SURVEY, UNITED STATES 2003-2006 AND 2007-2010
From 2003–2006 to 2007–2010 the percentage of daily calories consumed from fast foods among adults aged ≥20 years declined from 12.8% to 11.3%. A decrease from 12.7% to 10.5% also was observed for those aged 40–59 years, but no statistically significant change was noted for persons aged 20–39 years or ≥60 years. During both periods, the percentage of daily calories from consumption of fast foods was highest among those aged 20–39 years. Access full text.

FDA COMMISSIONER: FINAL MENU LABELING RULES COMING "SOON”
During a recent hearing held by the Senate Appropriations Committee, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said a final rule for menu and vending labeling is likely coming by the end of 2013, if not sooner. The proposed rule, to require calorie information at point of purchase in chains of 20 or more restaurants or vending machines, was issued in April of 2011 following the enactment of the Affordable Care Act.
CDC OBESITY STUDY: YOUTH’S USE OF CALORIE INFORMATION IN FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS
A new CDC study, published online today in the Journal of Public Health, has found that of young people who visited fast food or chain restaurants in the U.S. in 2010, girls and youth who were obese were more likely to use calorie information (or menu labeling) given in the restaurants to inform their food choices. Girls were 80% more likely to use calorie information when available than boys. Obese youth were 70% more likely to use calorie information when available than those who were at a healthy weight.
The study also found that young people who ate less frequently at fast food or chain restaurants (once a week or less) were 50% more likely to use the calorie information when available than young people who ate more frequently at these places (twice or more each week).
This research is based on data from the 2010 YouthStyles and HealthStyles mail surveys. The study sample consisted of 721 youth, ages 9 to 18 years. The study excluded youth who never eat at fast food or chain restaurants (about 8%) or who said they never noticed calorie information (about 20%).
Menu labeling requirements in restaurants can help consumers to make informed food choices. Federal law requires restaurants with at least 20 locations nationally to list calorie information next to menu items on menus or menu boards. This law includes the prominent placement of a statement concerning suggested daily caloric intake on the menu. While national menu labeling has not been implemented, some fast food and chain restaurants have begun to post this information voluntarily.

SCHOOL EMPLOYEE WELLNESS: A Guide for Protecting the Assets of Our Nation's Schools is a comprehensive guide that provides information, practical tools and resources for school employee wellness programs. It will help schools, school districts and states develop and support the implementation of school employee wellness programs that promote employee health, improve workforce productivity and reduce the costs of employee absenteeism and healthcare.
This Guide was developed by the Directors of Health Promotion and Education under a cooperative agreement with the Division of Adolescent and School Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Coordinating Center for Health Promotion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
EDUCATING THE STUDENT BODY: TAKING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION TO SCHOOL (2013)
Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic.
The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents.

MAY 27-31 IS TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR WEEK!
As part of the Tips From Former Smokers campaign, CDC launched the "Talk With Your Doctor” initiative to encourage health care providers and patients to talk about quitting smoking. In collaboration with leading medical organizations, CDC developed a wide range of resources for the medical community. These materials include waiting room posters, a pocket scripting card, a Medscape Expert Commentary, a one-page fact sheet, and frequently asked questions about tobacco quitlines. Additional materials, such as PowerPoint presentations, low-resolution images, and continuous-loop videos, are available at the Campaign Download Center.
- Consortium of National Networks to Impact Populations Experiencing Tobacco-Related and Cancer Health Disparities (CDC-RFA-DP13-1314) – CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control (DCPC) are working together in this collaborative Funding Opportunity Announcement to support a consortium of national networks to advance commercial tobacco use prevention and cancer prevention in populations experiencing tobacco-related and cancer health disparities. Letters of intent due June 7, 2013; application deadline: July 28, 2013.
NEW PUBLICATIONS ON TOBACCO MARKETING EXPENDITURES
Federal Trade Commission Cigarette Report for 2011 and Federal Trade Commission Smokeless Tobacco Report for 2011 - Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Key finding: There was a 4% increase in marketing expenditures for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco in 2011. The $8.82 billion increase represents the first increase in tobacco marketing since 2003. SMOKE-FREE POLICIES DO NOT HARM THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

MENTHOL IN TOBACCO PRODUCTS: WHAT LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS CAN DO, JULY 9, 1:00PM (ET)
Tobacco companies add flavors to their products to mask the harsh taste of tobacco, making it easier for young people to start smoking. That’s why Congress banned the sale of flavored cigarettes in 2009. But Congress made one exception to the flavor ban, deferring action on the most popular of all flavors — menthol — and directing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to decide whether continued sale of menthol cigarettes is "appropriate for public health.” Unfortunately, in the nearly four years since the law was enacted, the FDA has studied the issue but failed to take action to prohibit menthol in tobacco products. During this NACCHO webinar, experts from the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium will discuss what local health departments can do to press the FDA to take bold action while also considering local policy options to address the devastating public health impact of menthol in tobacco products. UPDATE FROM FDA: TOBACCO REGULATION AWARENESS, COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION (TRACE) PROGRAM FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
After careful consideration, FDA has decided not to fund any applications submitted in response to the Tobacco Regulation Awareness, Communication and Education Program Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). FDA remains committed to educating Americans about the health risks of tobacco products in accordance with the agency’s authorities and in support of its public health goals under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.
