Coffee Break: Developing Evidence-Informed Public Health Policy
Tuesday, June 14, 2:30 -3:00 pm ET
Sponsored by Applied Research and Evaluation Branch of CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP)
Identification of evidence-based policy strategies ensures that decision making is well-informed by the best available evidence. However, assessing the evidence base supporting policies is wrought with challenges. Many public health policies are multicomponent, and each component has its own evidence base. Furthermore, the evidence base examining policy impacts is sparse and rarely measures the independent population effects of specific policy components. To assess the extent to which public health policies align with best available evidence, DHDSP led the development of the Quality and Impact of Component (QuIC) Evidence Assessment Tool. DHDSP also developed the Policy Evidence Assessment Report (PEAR), a decision aid to help assess policy options using QuIC results. First, this presentation will explain the key concepts underlying QuIC and share QuIC Evidence Assessment results for state-level policies to prevent and control chronic disease. Second, it will show how state policymakers and practitioners can use QuIC and PEAR to inform policy development.
