Oct 2015 Impact Brief
October 2015
NACDD is the only organization representing all state and jurisdictional chronic disease staff, dedicated to building capacity and making public health good for the public.
Every October, I can’t help but think of our nation’s obesity epidemic as we collectively handout buckets of free candy to children at Halloween.  I am also reminded of Breast Cancer Awareness each October and cannot ignore the growing research that now links cancer to obesity.  November’s Diabetes Awareness Month coincides uncomfortably with our nation’s largest family meal where stuffing the turkey has become a metaphor for our unrestrained appetite.

I enjoy Halloween and I love Thanksgiving, however I believe that public health has a role to play in returning both holidays to their original focus.  A modest amount of candy in the hands of physically active children is not a problem and giving thanks around the dinner table should start with thanksgiving for good health and the freedom to pursue it.  I applaud the work of each of you – for pursuing practical public health interventions that aim to achieve a culture of health – aligned with a culture of holidays.
