Our Mission

The Vision and Eye Health Council provides leadership and expertise for the development of state-based vision programs.


The council pursues this through the following strategies:

  • Represent vision issues within NACDD.
  • Promote the link between eye health and chronic diseases at the state and national levels.
  • Promote policies and systems on the national level that enhance state-based activities.
  • Foster integration of vision-related activities and messages within chronic disease programs in state health departments.
  • Exchange ideas, strategies, successes and challenges related to eye health.
  • Improve surveillance within states and enhance data available to states.
  • Facilitate and enhance partnerships and collaborations between state health departments and local and national vision-related organizations for effective eye health programs.
  • Disseminate and develop tools and resources that enable state health departments to pursue vision-related programs for professionals and consumers.

CDC Vision Health Initiative
The Vision Health Initiative (VHI) is designed to promote vision health and quality of life for all populations, throughout all life stages, by preventing and controlling eye disease, eye injury, and vision loss resulting in disability.

Lighthouse International
Lighthouse International is a leading non profit organization dedicated to preserving vision and to providing critically needed vision and rehabilitation services to help people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss.

National Eye Health Education Program, National Eye Institute 
Through its National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP), the National Eye Institute conducts large-scale public and professional education programs in partnership with national organizations. NEHEP focuses on early detection and timely treatment of glaucoma and diabetic eye disease and the appropriate treatment for low vision.

New England Eye Institute
New England Eye, a teaching affiliate of New England College of Optometry, is a network of eye care centers that reach out into the community with customized programs for special populations.

New Mexico Health Care Takes on Diabetes
New Mexico Health Care Takes On Diabetes (NMHCTOD) is a coalition of 25 health care organizations that joined forces to reduce the negative health effects associated with diabetes among citizens of New Mexico.
