This employment opportunity is with the Public Health Division (PHD), which is part of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA). There is one full-time, permanent position located in Portland (800 NE Oregon Street). This position is classified as management service, non-supervisory and is not represented by a union.
This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.
Duties and responsibilities 

The Deputy State Epidemiologist serves as a subject matter expert on public health, preventive medicine, and medical epidemiology, providing scientific and epidemiological expertise and oversight throughout the Public Health Division of Oregon Health Authority, with primary focus in two centers: the Center for Prevention and Health Promotion and the Center for Protection. This position works under the State Health Officer/ State Epidemiologist.
Working conditions

Normal office environment. Open space concept for office. Regular travel to Salem is required; statewide travel for collaboration and training purposes as needed.

Qualifications, required and requested skills

Minimum qualifications: Your answers to the supplemental questions must be consistent with your described work experience. Your application will be reviewed to determine if you meet minimum qualifications. Qualified applicants with backgrounds that most closely match the needs of the position(s) will be invited to interview. Must meet or be eligible to meet the State of Oregon licensing requirements for a medical doctor at the time of hire and obtain State of Oregon licensure within six months of hire AND must have advanced training in epidemiology.

Transcripts must be from an accredited educational institution and can be official or unofficial at time of application. Requested skills: Content expert in portfolio of assigned programs, with comprehensive knowledge and training related to the science of public health and epidemiology.

Experience developing and implementing strategic public health surveillance and data collection systems, epidemiologic analyses, evidence-based programs, and policies through partnerships with stakeholders, local, state and federal officials, and national partners.

Knowledge of Oregon statutory authority and parameters for data collection and sharing protocols.

Experience writing and editing scientific publications; data analytics, scientific methodology and reporting of findings related to epidemiologic analyses and implications for public health practice and policy.

Expertise in Ph.D. priorities areas including: Chronic Diseases; Injury; Maternal/ Child Health; Environmental Public Health and toxicology.

Strong knowledge of public health issues with the demonstrated ability to respond effectively to media, community groups and special interest groups regarding politically charged situations that may be controversial.

Experience in proposed rule-making, regulation and policy development; legislative bill analysis.

Ability to serve as a spokesperson for legislative testimony on issues related to public health matters.

Partnership with communications departments to provide rational, evidence-based responses to media and public inquiries; and translating scientific information for use in public health policy development activities.

Experience with public policy, administration and principles of organizational management.

Comprehensive experience with surveillance methods, tracking systems and registries related to Public Health practice and matters.

Knowledge of public health science principles and experience in research and/or epidemiology of the programmatic areas in the Center for Health Protection and the Center for Prevention and Health Promotion.
