February 2016 Impact Brief
February 2016
NACDD is the only organization representing all state and jurisdictional chronic disease staff, dedicated to building capacity and making public health good for the public.

NACDD is continuing to reinvent itself in 2016.  Nearly all of its programs, projects, technical assistance, services, learning opportunities and leadership positions have been retooled and reinvigorated to provide greater alignment with the needs of states and the CDC.

I can point to the brand new development of G.E.A.R. Groups which are dynamic, outcome-based groups, modeled after communities of practice and focused on the topics that states told us were top priorities.  Though these groups filled up within 24 hours of being posted, their learnings will be shared with the entire association and new groups will form upon their completion.  NACDD is using the Generate, Educate, Activate and Respond (G.E.A.R.) principles in much of its work to drive action and measurable results.  All members are welcome to leverage these principles.

We have also raised the bar on our monthly educational webinars, bringing national leaders to deliver expert content relevant to your work.  This Thursday at 3pm ET, we will hear from Dr. Jim Dearing, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Communication at Michigan State University.  Formerly the Senior Scientist for Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Dearing studies diffusion of innovations, and use of diffusion principles to disseminate, implement and sustain worthy innovations.

All of NACDD’s work is being guided by the central themes of leadership development and training.  NACDD is committed to equip its members for the new landscape in public health, addressing the ACA, new Congressional appropriations, CDC FOAs and the ever-changing workforce.  In addition to assisting with the CDC’s Regional Meetings and a National Thought Leaders Roundtable, NACDD will be hosting its first National Chronic Disease Academy in 5 years.  Mark your calendars for August 30th -September 1st in Denver, Colorado.

It is truly exciting to see how much change is occurring in state health departments and we are changing too – to meet your needs.  My “door” is always open at  You are the fuel of this association and I thank you for your active engagement and selfless service.
