Lupus Projects

The CDC has funded the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) as part of its efforts to Develop and Disseminate Programs to Build Sustainable Lupus Awareness, Knowledge, Skills and Partnerships, designed to improve health outcomes and health-related quality of life among individuals with lupus. The ACR and LFA are collaborating to develop a public awareness campaign in 2017 for specific audiences.

As part of its CDC grant, the ACR partnered with NACDD to convene three state workshops to promote lupus education,  awareness and provider training.  Workshops were held with the  Georgia Council on Lupus Education and Awareness ( in Atlanta on August 6, 2016; the Illinois Public Health Association in Springfield on August 8; and the Big Bend Rural Health Network ( in Tallahassee  on August 29.

Five lupus projects were designed to help understand how common lupus is and how frequently it develops in different racial and ethnic groups. Three longitudinal follow-up studies of established population-based lupus cohorts will determine natural history, access to care, current treatment, disparities, and other outcomes. These projects are being conducted by the University of Michigan, Emory University, and University of California, San Francisco.

As part of its Lupus Education and Awareness for Patients Professionals and Providers Program, the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) has funded eight community based agencies, faith based organizations and local and state health departments to provide lupus health education and awareness activities and to implement a public awareness campaign.  This project is funded by the DHHS Office of Minority Health and ended June 30, 2016.
