October 2014 Impact Brief
October 2014
NACDD is the only organization representing all state and jurisdictional chronic disease staff, dedicated to building capacity and making public health good for the public.
Message from the CEO

By now everyone has seen Delta Airline's pink plane or the NFL's pink cleats designed to raise awareness for breast cancer research.  While pink ribbons are ubiquitous today, it has been a journey of more than two decades starting with 68-year old Charlotte Haley, who handed out homemade cards with ribbons pinned to them, urging increased funding to fight cancer.  From there, Susan G. Komen, Estee Lauder and Self magazine turned a pink ribbon into a rose' retail rage.  Behind the scenes, state health departments funded screenings, education and awareness efforts that have saved millions of lives.  Now, men's health is embracing a mustache moniker to help raise awareness for men's mental health, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.  In an effort to do our part, NACDD is asking all of its members to "sport a 'stash'" and take either a group picture or a selfie and send it to me at  At the end of "Movember" we will post a collage of all the pictures on the NACDD website.  Sometimes the smallest efforts - like that of Charlotte Haley - can have the largest impact.
